I don’t have anything against the use of calculated columns in Power BI semantic models in general but you do need to be careful using them with DirectQuery mode. You now have a local composite model in Power BI Desktop that is connected to the Source Model semantic model.

In the blog post for the October 2022 release of Power BI Desktop there’s a brief description of a new optimisation in Power BI for filters that perform searches in text columns. If 25 seconds elapse then the build will timeout and Power BI will continue to run the query without the index being present.
