4 Competitor Analysis Tools for Government Spend

Federal and local government spending databases sometimes publish information about contract values that is impossible to get elsewhere. This may include the fees that consultancies charge, the pricing of software and other services. If your competitors have tendered for government work, these databases may be useful sources of competitor information, particularly competitor pricing.

1. FedSpending

FedSpending is a competitive intelligence tool that is used by competitors to track federal spending and to hold agencies accountable for managing their funds. Companies can conduct competitor research to search over one hundred thousand reports from recipients of contracts, grants and loans.

2. FPDS

The Federal Procurement Data System is a research tool for the United States government-wide procurement data. Using this system, you can access detailed information on contract actions that are over three thousand dollars. FPDS can be a useful source of information although often more so at an aggregate level than for individual competitors.

3. GovWin

GovWin is a tool primarily used to find and win government contracts. Although it is not intended as a competitor research tool, it can be used to find data about contracts awarded and some of the associated documentation, which may include contracts. GovWin may be best suited to companies who themselves want to bid for government work.

4. GSA Advantage

GSA Advantage is a government database from the General Services Administration. It aggregates data from various government purchasing programs and provides data at aggregate level but also for individual contracts and for some individual providers. This is another tool that is not intended for competitor analysis but can provide useful information nonetheless.
