EMEA Startups That Are Thriving In 2021

emea startups fast-growing

Like many global economies, the European market reportedly contracted by around 6.8% in 2020. Despite this, specific industries within the region have seen impressive growth and innovation.

This is evident when looking at the EMEA startup landscape. According to EU-Startups.com, a leading online magazine about startups in Europe, some of the industries that are performing well and expected to thrive in 2021 include:

  • Digital edtech
  • Fintech
  • Delivery & e-commerce
  • Health & wellness
  • HR tech

The growth of these digital industries represents significant opportunities for cloud providers - if they know where to look. We examined Intricately’s cloud adoption, usage and spend data on three selected EMEA-based startups in these industries: Brainly, Klarna and Deliveroo

Digital EdTech: Innovation for enduring education

As COVID-19 forced many classrooms and universities to go virtual overnight, EdTech solutions encountered opportunities for rapid growth.

One example is Brainly, an online learning platform based in Kraków, Poland. The company saw its user base grow from 150 million users in 2019 to 350 million at the end of 2020, and in December announced an $80 million Series D funding round.

Brainly’s total estimated monthly cloud spend is around $1 million. Their primary cloud hosting product is Amazon EC2, and their primary CDN product is Cloudflare. View Brainly’s full cloud adoption, usage and spend data in Intricately

FinTech: Meeting market demand for accessibility

Another sector that saw growth in 2020 was financial technology. According to EU-Startups magazine, the demand for contactless solutions has also accelerated growth and innovation among fintech services.

Klarna, a platform for e-commerce payment solutions based in Stockholm, is one example of this FinTech boom in EMEA. As of August 2020, CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski said that a stock market flotation of Europe’s largest privately owned fintech is ‘getting closer’ as the Swedish group benefited from a surge in online shopping.

Klarna’s total estimated monthly cloud spend is around $2.7 million. Their primary cloud hosting product is Amazon EC2 and their primary CDN product is Amazon CloudFront. View Klarna’s cloud adoption, usage and spend data in Intricately.

E-Commerce delivery: Providing safer ways to shop

Ordering food and other products online was the safest way to shop during COVID-19. Delivery and e-commerce and providers who ramped up their technology to meet this global saw huge growth - and will continue to grow in 2021.

One example in the European market is Deliveroo, a food delivery platform based in London. The company reported revenue growth of over 650% year on year. This explosive growth helped the company reach a $7 billion valuation after their latest funding round. An IPO is expected to be announced as early as March 8th.

Deliveroo’s total estimated monthly cloud spend is around $1.5 million. Their primary cloud hosting product is Amazon EC2 and their primary CDN product is Cloudflare. View Deliveroo’s cloud adoption, usage and spend data in Intricately.
