The Manager, Beneficiary Services – Life Insurance Claims will co-lead with another manager a team of 20 Claims Specialists that provide extraordinary care and empathy to beneficiaries of life insurance death benefits and living benefits including long term care, critical and chronic illness, disability waiver of premium, and accelerated death benefits. The Manager is responsible for ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements related to claims processing, training and coaching of team members, developing, prioritizing and implementing strategic initiatives, creating a culture of continuous improvement and root cause problem solving, setting objectives and monitoring operational metrics for optimal performance. In addition, the Manager is responsible for creating policies and procedures and implementing tools and training to detect and prevent claims fraud. This role works closely with Office of General Counsel, Underwriting, SIU, external investigation firms and other claims operations leaders.

The ideal candidates will possess the following skills:
- A minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in the financial services industry, preferably in a life claims function

Note: Opportunity is remote and hybrid eligible. Work location is Grandview Heights, Ohio. Work hours will be Monday – Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM. The role is not eligible for overtime.

As a Manager, you’ll lead the day-to-day claims operations related to life insurance, annuities, or income products. You’ll drive claims performance to achieve operational results, alignment with business goals and strategies and claims expense outcomes.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities:

Oversees a team responsible for Nationwide life and annuity claims – individual life, annuities, and income products claims’ organization, as well as long-term care, critical and chronic illness, and accelerated death benefits

Leads claim risk management to limit losses due to overpayment, early duration claims (contestable) and fraud. Elevate cases to be referred to investigative firms and outside legal counsel.

Implement and oversee claims best practices.

Leads a team of life insurance or annuity claims specialist, incorporating continuous improvement with technology and business practices to deliver operational results, including member experience, strategic alignment with business goals and claims expense outcomes.

Responsible for resolving claims handling issues and formal complaints from members, financial professionals, beneficiaries, and firm partners.

Manages third party relationships, as appropriate, to mitigate risk for claims and drive efficiency. Monitor the performance of vendors including claims service providers and investigative firms.

Develops direct reports to achieve high performance in current roles and prepare them for future roles.
May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Reporting Relationships: Leads five to 15 associates at various levels. Reports to The Director, Beneficiary Services- Life & Annuity
Typical Skills and Experiences:
Education: Undergraduate degree in business administration, management, finance, pre-law or related field and/or technical insurance coursework preferred. MBA preferred.
License/Certification/Designation:
Experience: 7 years of financial services experiences in a customer service, quality control or operations environment. Broad experience and understanding of managing Annuity and Life Claims. Supervisory experience preferred.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Extensive knowledge of insurance industry concepts including, but not limited to, financial services products, regulations and guidelines. Effective team leadership and management skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to make decisions and build consensus with peers.
Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and HR Business Partner.
