  • MassMutual Recognized as one of the 50 Most Community-Minded Companies in the United States

June 22, 2022 by Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Today, Points of Light, the world’s largest nonprofit dedicated to accelerating people-powered change, announced The Civic 50 honorees of 2022 and a report featuring key trends, benchmarking data, and insights from the honorees. In its first year applying, Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) has been named a 2022 honoree of The Civic 50.

For the last decade, The Civic 50 has provided a national standard for corporate citizenship and showcases how companies can use their time, skills, and resources to drive social impact in their communities and company. The Civic 50 honorees are companies with annual U.S. revenues of at least $1 billion and are selected based on four dimensions of their corporate citizenship and social impact programs – investment of resources, integration across business functions, institutionalization through policies and systems and impact measurement.

“MassMutual is proud and honored to be named among The Civic 50’s most community-minded companies,” said Roger Crandall, Chairman, President and CEO, MassMutual. “This recognition reflects our enduring commitment to working toward the success of all our stakeholders. Through our ongoing investments in areas that have significant impact and expand financial resiliency in our communities, we look forward to making meaningful contributions to our world with our fellow honorees for generations to come.”

In 2021, MassMutual provided more than $20 million in grants and contributions to social causes in the U.S. addressing education, financial wellness, and economic development and entrepreneurship, among others. MassMutual employees volunteered over 11,000 hours through company-sponsored volunteerism with nearly $2 million in matched employee donations. As an example, the MassMutual legal division created a pro bono program that has grown since inception 15 years ago, providing thousands of hours of free legal service to people facing evictions, veterans and immigrants, amongst many others. Another example: A grant from the MassMutual Foundation, combined with support from the legal division, was instrumental in the development and growth of the Center for Social Justice at Western New England University’s School of Law located in Springfield, Mass.

“Corporate leadership and commitment to civic engagement is critical for strengthening communities,” said Natalye Paquin, president & CEO of Points of Light. “Our most recent global research shows 86 percent of people say they expect companies to take action on a social issue. Companies like MassMutual are leading the way and setting an example of how you can leverage your employee talent, business models and assets to create deep impact that drives transformational change.”

The Civic 50 survey is administered by True Impact and consists of quantitative and multiple-choice questions that inform scoring process. The Civic 50 is the only survey and ranking system that exclusively measures corporate involvement in communities.
